Light sensors
Light sensors are one of the most common types of sensor. They are used for example in street lights, alarms and SLR cameras.

JAI’s light sensor (patent pending) simulates the light conditions on a number plate and measures the light based on the amount of light that hits its A or B plate side.

The light sensor reports the amount of light as a number between 0 (total darkness) and 255 (very bright), and sends that information to JAI’s camera system, which interprets the information.

Based on the “light amount” information, the camera turns the flash “on” or “off” (this function is controllable by setting thresholds for the different conditions), and sets the camera gain and shutter speed for optimal and crisp image quality.

Due to the design of the JAI-developed light sensor, the camera system is provided with optimal settings to capture bright and clear images of vehicle number plates under all weather conditions.

So the system only needs to take one image of each vehicle, which reduces the amount of data processing (no need to search among multiple number plate images to find an image with correct exposure).

Light Sources
The choice of light source depends on whether the application requires the color of the vehicle or the number plate to be visible.

JAI can provide a wide range of lighting solutions depending on the imaging requirements for the application. We can provide permanent white light, or colored filters for flashes with different characteristics.
